New! Advanced Reproductive Surgery Program
During infertility treatment, some women discover underlying issues affecting their ability to conceive. In many cases, these issues can be resolved through surgical procedures.
Fertility Centers of New England’s new Advanced Reproductive Surgery program, led by world-class surgeon Dr. Antonio Gargiulo, aims to provide our patients with unparalleled access to cutting-edge minimally invasive fertility-preserving and fertility-enhancing options.
Benefits of Surgery for Reproductive Health
Minimally invasive surgery for reproductive health offers a range of benefits, making it a preferred choice for many patients. The benefits include:
- This advanced surgical approach, which includes laparoscopic and robotic techniques, results in smaller incisions, leading to reduced scarring and quicker recovery times.
- Patients typically experience less postoperative pain and a lower risk of infection compared to traditional open surgery.
- Additionally, the precision of minimally invasive methods allows for improved outcomes in treating conditions like endometriosis, fibroids, and ovarian cysts while preserving fertility whenever possible.
Who Should Consider It
Women who should consider reproductive surgery include those diagnosed with:
- Ovarian Cysts
- Fibroids
- Scar Tissue
- Blocked Fallopian Tubes
- Uterine Polyps
- Endometriosis
If these conditions are interfering with fertility or causing discomfort, reproductive surgery can help restore normal function and improve the chances of conception.

Types of Minimally Invasive Surgical Procedures
If you’ve been diagnosed with a condition that compromises your fertility, we are here to guide you along the way. There are several types of minimally invasive surgical procedures available to treat women with infertility.
Laparoscopy involves a small incision through which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted to diagnose and treat issues like endometriosis, ovarian cysts, and blocked fallopian tubes. This enables the us to examine organs and conduct a range of procedures aimed at restoring, enhancing, and preserving fertility.
Robot-assisted laparoscopy, also known as robot-assisted minimally invasive surgery (MIS), is a surgical technique that combines the precision of robotic technology with the benefits of laparoscopic surgery. In robot-assisted laparoscopy, the surgeon controls robotic arms equipped with surgical instruments from a console located in the operating room.
Robot-assisted laparoscopy offers several advantages over traditional laparoscopic surgery, including:
1. Enhanced Visualization: The high-definition camera provides a magnified, three-dimensional view of the surgical site, allowing for better visualization of anatomical structures and surgical landmarks.
2. Improved Dexterity: The robotic arms have a greater range of motion and can perform delicate maneuvers with precision, allowing for more precise dissection and suturing in confined spaces.
3. Reduced Hand Tremor: The robotic system filters out hand tremors, enabling the surgeon to perform intricate tasks with steadiness and control.
4. Enhanced Ergonomics: The console is ergonomically designed to minimize surgeon fatigue and discomfort during long surgical procedures, promoting better surgical outcomes.
5. Reduced Tissue Trauma: Robot-assisted surgery uses smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, resulting in less tissue trauma, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery times for patients.
Robot-assisted laparoscopy is used in a variety of surgical procedures across different medical specialties, including gynecology, urology, general surgery, and colorectal surgery. Common gynecological procedures performed using robot-assisted laparoscopy include hysterectomy, myomectomy (fibroid removal), endometriosis excision, and pelvic floor reconstruction.
Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various conditions affecting the uterus (womb) and cervix. During a hysteroscopy, a thin, lighted tube called a hysteroscope is inserted through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. This allows the surgeon to visualize the inside of the uterus and identify any abnormalities, such as polyps, fibroids, adhesions (scar tissue), or structural defects.
Depending on the findings, hysteroscopy can be both diagnostic and therapeutic. In a diagnostic hysteroscopy, the surgeon examines the uterine cavity to assess the presence of any abnormalities. In a therapeutic hysteroscopy, the surgeon may perform various procedures to correct or treat identified issues. These procedures may include removing polyps or fibroids, resecting adhesions, or repairing structural abnormalities such as a uterine septum.
Hysteroscopy is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity of the surgery. It offers several advantages over traditional open surgery, including shorter recovery times, reduced risk of complications, and minimal scarring. Hysteroscopy is commonly used in the evaluation and management of infertility, abnormal uterine bleeding, recurrent miscarriage, and other gynecological conditions affecting the uterus.
