About Fertility
Metformin Increases Pregnancy Success for Infertility Patients With PCOS
A recent meta-analysis of 12 randomized clinical trials analyzed pregnancy rates amongst women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) who were overweight and going through fertility treatment. This study found that metformin increases pregnancy success for infertility patients with PCOS. Specifically, PCOS patients taking metformin had higher clinical pregnancy rates compared to those who were not taking metformin. Additionally, women taking metformin had a lower risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome. These benefits were primarily seen in women with a body mass index (BMI) of 26 or greater.
Weight and PCOS
While many women with PCOS struggle with their weight, 20% of women with PCOS are not overweight at all. PCOS is, however, associated with a number of medical problems, including: endometrial cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Living a healthy lifestyle is very important for patients with PCOS. For PCOS patients with a BMI of 26 or greater, metformin also appears to offer both metabolic and fertility benefits.
