COVID-19
Is COVID-19 Vaccination Safe During Pregnancy?
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, patients and healthcare providers have expressed concern about the impact of this virus on pregnancy. We now know that infection during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of maternal morbidity and adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, stillbirth, neonatal and perinatal morbidity, hospitalization, ICU admission, and death. Is COVID-19 vaccination safe during pregnancy?
Despite the risks of COVID-19 infection, many patients are reluctant to get vaccinated during pregnancy. A recent meta-analysis found that Covid-19 vaccination during pregnancy was NOT associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal or fetal pregnancy outcomes. Additionally, COVID-19 vaccination appeared to decrease the infant’s risk for NICU admission and death. Based on these results, the authors concluded that COVID-19 vaccination appeared to be safe and beneficial for pregnant patients.
These findings underscore the importance of vaccination for pregnant individuals, as recommended by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine (SMFM).
