Easy At-Home Workouts for Fertility
Exercise and healthy living are important at every stage of life. Exercise has countless benefits, including weight management, disease prevention, improved cardiovascular health, and stress reduction, to name a few. New research suggests that exercise may even improve sperm quality. Most exercise programs that are started prior to pregnancy can be continued during pregnancy. We may ask patients to temporarily scale back any high-impact exercise during a fertility treatment cycle, but there are still numerous options for safely working out while going through fertility treatment. In particular, easy at-home workouts for fertility can include walking, dancing, yoga, barre classes, Pilates, swimming, and many Peloton offerings are excellent ways to stay fit and reduce stress prior to and during pregnancy. These options are also considered safe while going through fertility treatment.
Is It Safe to Exercise During Pregnancy?
We are commonly asked, “Is it safe to exercise during pregnancy?” The answer is yes! Exercise is considered safe and beneficial before, during, and after pregnancy. According to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the risks of exercise during pregnancy are minimal. While contact sports should be avoided, women who are active prior to pregnancy can maintain the same level of physical activity during the pregnancy. Even for women who are not particularly active prior to pregnancy, activities like walking can be very beneficial during pregnancy.
Exercise Can Improve Sperm Quality and Count
A recent study published in the December 2016 journal Reproduction showed that moderate exercise improves sperm number and quality. By exercising three times a week sperm quality improved; the improvement with moderate exercise was even more than intense exercise regimens.
